CHAPTER 23

After meeting Riley and Luke for breakfast, Cooper and Adele set out to meet with Lyle Blaylock. At breakfast, Luke had asked them if they’d be willing to track Lyle down and see if he’d speak to them. Cooper and Adele were on board with the idea since they were the ones who had uncovered his connection at the start.

It took a little research to figure out exactly where Lyle lived on St. Thomas. They had asked Vic at the front desk, but he had no idea. Neither did any of the other hotel staff. Once Cooper got ahold of some real estate records, they were on their way. They called James and he picked them up in front of the hotel.

Lyle Blaylock lived across the island, outside of the tourist area, and his property had a private beach. They traveled up a winding road that passed Blackbeard’s Castle. That was one tourist spot Cooper wanted to see before they left for home. The road climbed to a peak and then they came down on the other side. Finally, James drove them along a narrow road with swaying palm trees lined with gated mansions.

James pulled to a stop in front of a heavily tree-covered property where only the white stone peaks of the house were visible through the trees. “Here you go. Do you want me to wait or will you call me when you’re done?”

Cooper waved him off. “We will call you. After we finish here, we might stick around and explore this area of the island for a bit.” They had passed a restaurant with ocean views, and Cooper wouldn’t mind having a romantic lunch with Adele.

He tried to hand cash to James but the man refused. “Luke paid me for the duration. We are all set.” He wouldn’t take the tip Cooper tried to give him either.

They waited until James drove off and then pushed the intercom button for the gate. A man’s voice came over the speaker and asked them to identify themselves. Cooper explained who they were and why they were there. He didn’t want to trick somebody and get inside only to be kicked out again. He didn’t expect they’d get much further than the gate, so he was taken aback by the friendly response and the gate that swung open.

“That was easier than I thought it would be,” Cooper said as they walked down the crushed shell driveway. The home was probably one of the most impressive Cooper had seen in a long time. It also fit his taste perfectly. All he needed was a few million dollars and he’d be all set. He knew from the real estate documents how much Lyle had paid for the seven-thousand-square-foot home with four bedrooms and four and a half baths. There was also a pool deck, private beach, and ocean views from every room in the open concept home. Reading it on paper was one thing. Witnessing it in person was entirely more impressive.

Adele hip-checked him as they walked.
